- Dr. Shoaib Usman and Dr. Syed Alam (Syed Bahauddin Alam) jointly have been awarded ~$2 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) [JUNE 9, 2023] on Consent-Based Siting incorporating Machine Learning with Explainable AI for the project entitled “Acceptance after Engagement, Education & Experiential-learning (AEEE).” We collaborated with University of Missouri – Columbia (MO), University of Illinois (IL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MA), University of Nevada (NV), Taylor Geospatial Institute (MO), and St. Louis University (MO) as partners.

- Dr. Alam has been invited as a speaker at the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies on “Scientific Machine Learning Towards Digital Twin Solution for Complex Systems.” The seminar will take on March 13, 2023.
- Dr. Alam was invited as a seminar speaker at Ontario Tech University, USA, on January 12, 2023. The title of the seminar was “The components of Trustworthy and Explainable Digital Twin-Enabling Technologies for Nuclear Systems.”
- Dr. Alam has been invited as a speaker at the “Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Department, Missouri S&T” on “Challenges of Digital Twin for Nuclear Systems? – Let’s Solve it.” The seminar was held on October 24, 2022.
- Dr. Syed Alam received the “University Outstanding Teaching Award 2022″ in recognition of notable contributions to teaching and commitment to the students by Missouri S&T, 2022. He has received this recognition for two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022.

The title of the seminar was “Demystifying Digital Twin (DT)-Enabling Technologies for Nuclear Systems: An International Collaborative Effort.”
- Dr. Alam has been invited as a speaker at SIAM CSE 2023 mini-symposium on “Machine learning and data-driven methods in probabilistic mechanics, risk, and reliability assessment.” The symposium will be taking place in Amsterdam from Feb 26 – Mar 03, 2023.
- Dr. Alam has been invited to Kummer innovation Day (October 11, 2022) to present his funded research on “Trustworthy Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Framework Development for Hybrid and Sustainable Energy Systems“
- Two of Dr. Alam’s graduate students: Brandon Bloss and Alexander Foutch, have been recommended for the final phase of the United States Department of Defense (DoD) Scholarship, known as the SMART (Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation) Scholarship. They are working on “Deep Learning Optimization of Composite Accident Tolerant Fuel Geometry to Improve Fuel Burnup and Power Density for the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Applications.” On average, 15% are awarded out of all applicants in the US universities in STEM, while the Nuclear Engineering discipline’s success rate is less than 1%.
